History: Quincy Stanclift left the family farm in Brookfield, Missouri to join an uncle working in a gold mine above Auburn, CA. First he stopped to work in Sheridan. He made the mistake of drinking from an abandoned well and became very ill. Eugene Rogers took Quincy in and got a doctor to attend to him. On the way to Auburn, he suffered a relapse and died on July 27, 1875 at the age of 26 and was buried at the top of a hill on Roger's property. Eugene wrote to Quincy's sister Adelaide and after exchanging letters, she came to Sheridan and married. Soon other family members came west to join her. Quincy's gravesite became a one acre private cemetery. In 1888, Sheridan Lodge #312, International Order of Odd Fellows purchased two acres from Rogers for a cemetery. Adelaide Rogers gave the family cemetery to the IOOF. In 1928, the IOOF Lodge deeded the three acres to Placer County Cemetery District #1. In 1921, the Russian Colony (17 families) in Sheridan was refused permission to bury one of their members in the IOOF cemetery, so they started their own cemetery on the north side of the IOOF cemetery. In 1970 this section known both as the Russian Colony Cemetery and the Sheridan Molokan Church Cemetery was deeded to the district. Visitors will find ten gravestones (sections 129 and 130) in the old family plot at the top of the hill. Among them are Eugene and Adelaide Stanclift) Rogers. Eugene was the founder of Roger's/Union Shed in 1857 and the town of Sheridan. Contact: The Sheridan, Manzanita, and Lincoln Cemeteries are owned and maintained by Placer County Cemetery District #1.
